Thriving Through Winter: Planting Annuals to Brighten Your Garden

Many of our clients ask us about being able to see beautiful flowers all year round. Annuals produce the bright showy inflorescences that most people picture when thinking about flower gardens. As the name suggests, annuals complete their life cycle in a year, although we can occasionally make them last a bit longer due to the Mediterranean climate we experience in LA.

Although an annual arrangement can be dazzling to the senses, clients should know about the hidden costs of relying heavily on blooming annuals so that they can decide if a garden design serves their wishes.

  • Flowering plants have a blooming season. They might produce flowers all year, but they have a season where they show off the most.

  • Due to the blooming seasons, it is ideal to use flower plants that bloom in alternate seasons to get that display throughout the year.

  • Flowering plants and shrubs can require more maintenance. From deadheading to pest control, flowering plants need attention to keep producing vibrant flowers.

  • Annuals require replanting every 12-16 months. Some plants may die during the year and need to be replaced to fill in gaps.

We love to see the look on our clients when we complete an annual installation. Spending time in a lush flowering garden can be an invigorating experience that reduces stress. Moreover, these gardens are a source of beauty that our clients love to bask in and share with those close to them.
